Karen Deakin Photography | About

Hello and thank you for visiting my website. I do hope you enjoy viewing my photos.

A little about me. Friends have said I was born with 'itchy digits' - I have a passion for travelling and will take off to new places whenever I can (within the confines of a full time job). I have been fortunate to travel to some wonderful places and through that, and a desire to capture my travel memories in pictures, I developed a passion for photography.

In the early days I used a 'point and shoot' compact camera, always set to Auto mode so the camera did all the 'thinking'. In October 2011, after an incredible trip to South West America, I decided to get more serious about taking the kind of photographs I always enjoyed seeing from others. So I ventured into the realms of DSLR photography and started teaching myself all I could, mostly from reading books and lots of practice out in the field.

With a trip to South Africa looming, I turned my hand to wildlife photography, trying to prepare myself as much as I could for the safaris, something that had been a life long dream of mines. Photographing wildlife is not nearly as straightforward as still life, simply because of its unpredictability, and I needed to be as ready as I could be to capture the memories of this once in a lifetime trip. And with time I found that, regardless of the trip ahead, I had a passion for photographing wildlife, nature, landscapes - anything that captures a moment of time in the world that we live in.

My first DSLR was a Nikon D5100, a fabulous beginner's camera, before then upgrading. I now shoot a Nikon D850 and D810. I carry the following additional items in my camera bag:

Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 lens
Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 lens
Nikon 70-200mm f4 lens
Nikon 300mm f2.8 VRII lens
Nikon 50mm f1.8
Various filters and Nikon 1.4x TC

Between that little lot, I find myself prepared for most opportunities!

I have now had images selected and published by National Geographic, showing anybody can succeed in this field with enough determination and creativity!

Which brings me to my website. It's a gallery of my favourite images, to keep, enjoy, and share. Most of my photos are for sale and license should you be interested in a particular print. In addition to my website my work can be purchased on the following stockist sites:

To conclude - it is a true saying that 'a picture tells a thousand words'. I hope you will enjoy the stories my website will tell. And please feel free to leave a 'hello' in the guest book!

Thank you.
